PLAINVILLE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Earlier this month, Travis Burkhart, a victim of a traumatic brain injury via car accident, and his family received the gift of an Action Track Chair that will allow him to easily ride around their property.

In February 2008, Travis was returning to the University of Southern Indiana when he lost control of his vehicle in freezing rain.

“He was in ICU for 2 weeks, on life support for 2 weeks, and we have been all over the United States trying to find out what could work for him,” said his father, Mike Burkhart.

This led to the start of the Travis Burkhart Foundation which helps out families that are going through this same struggle in the form of monetary aid, food, gas, and information. This foundation grew on social media via TikTok where the family found a lot of support through a farming community which led to two midwestern farmers teaming up and buying Travis a $23,000 Texas Longhorn Action Track Chair.

“It tugs at the heart knowing that you have helped someone’s life that has been limited in what they can do, and you have expanded what he is capable of doing now,” said local farmer, Brian Douglas.

Both farmers agreed that none of this would have come about without TikTok and the family that they have created through that over the years.

“It is a chance for all of us to gather as a family, because that is what it is a giant family, and gather together over fellowship,” said local farmer, Jaret Strickland. “You have to call it a FarmTok family, because that is what it is and what we are.”

Travis’ mother, Kim Burkhart, said this was something they could have never dreamt about, and they will forever be thankful for the community that they have.

“As a mom going through this with the foundation, we always give and never expect anything back,” said Burkhart. “To receive this gift from everyone is just truly humbling and we are just extremely grateful.”
